POST

The role of economics

The postal sector is at a key point in its evolution.  Former postal administrations are converting into corporate businesses and increasingly operating with commercial imperatives.  Competition is gradually being introduced into the European postal sector in line with a framework Community harmonisation, and independent National Regulatory Authorities are applying ex ante regulatory approaches to ensure the universal postal service, promote competition in the market and control dominant suppliers.

In this period of rapid sector development, careful economic and regulatory analysis is crucial for all interested stakeholders, including market players, regulatory bodies and Ministries.  Regulatory economists can help to advise about the impact of potential policy choices and to resolve disputes between companies, regulators and interested parties.
